4 out of 5 stars HK receiver   May 9, 2008
Phil Everson (Media, PA United States)
My only complaint is that it doesn't seem to have a built in phono pre-amp (there's a separate amp for all eight speakers, but no phono amp?). Other than that it's an incredible piece of scientific equipment. It has a mic that you can place where your listen, and it runs a test pattern to locate the eight speakers and adjust the surround sound accordingly. The on-screen menu is nice for setting up the inpute. The defaults were frustrating until I got that connected - HDMI worked best for linking it to the TV.

4 out of 5 stars Great Receiver!!   May 3, 2008

This receiver so far has been working great, my only qualm with it so far is that my xbox outputs 1080i in to the component cables which only outputs to 720p through the hdmi cables... i may still need to mess with some settings but as it is now it wont display on the tv...

Receiver is a great price though and the sounds and optinos on it make it a great buy.

1 out of 5 stars Great sound, very poor quality   April 26, 2008

I bought this receiver based on reviews that rated the HK units as some of the best for music. My setup includes a set of high end Klipsch speakers and a 12" JBL sub-woofer, sound was excellent while it worked. I have gone through 2 units now. The first one failed after 2 months and was replaced by HK under warranty. The second failed 1 week ago and I still have not been able to get a response from tech support. I am now in the market for a new unit and will not buy another HK receiver. As much as I liked the sound the low quality and low reliability are simply unacceptable. As others have referenced the remote is awkward and not very user friendly. A minor negative. On the positive side, the sound was very good. The low quality leads me to write this and strongly recommend you look elsewhere.

I bought the HL 247 this past weekend at Best Buy on kind of a whim. I was looking to upgrade our existing Pioneer receiver, but was going to wait; that is until I was BB this weekend. So far so good, but a couple of things that I've seen here raise a few questions. I'm going to have to go back to the store and get some clarification on a few items.....

The 247 is matched with the Sony Bravia XBR4 52", Panasonic Bluray DVD, a basic Sony VCR and Philips HDMI cables. The speakers are the existing Pioneer speakers that were part of the original system and they sound better with the HK than they did with the Pioneer receiver.

Albeit a little cumbersome to hook up, especially with all the available input options, it's finally up and running and doing what I expected it to. It's only been a couple of days, but like I said earlier, so far so good.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Receiver!   March 9, 2008

The earliest reviews reflect a bug that was fixed by the manufacturer. This integrates your home theater and home audio very nicely.

The remote control is a bit overkill, but it can really pump out a lot of sound. I am using it with the HKTS 18 Audio speakers. I fear I would break the windows if I maxed this out.

Do some research, HK advertises a more true "watts per channel" than other mfrs and especially from the old days. You may think 50w sounds a tad weak, but it could fill a large house with more sound than you know what to do with. I have not tried the multi room feature.

Also, with HK, you can call and speak to a technician if you have questions and they are actually in the USA, and not some helpless automated person on a line overseas reading answers from a card. They know what they are doing and how to get you configured, even if the issue might be more related to your cable plan or another unrelated product
