You might expect the debut album from a woman who has collaborated extensively with Tricky and Orbital to be both wondrous and strange--and you'd be right to. What you might not expect is the depth of Alison Goldfrapp's beguiling, distracting 21st-century noir visions on Felt Mountain. She and her fellow composer Will Gregory can mix in Brechtian cabaret; classical instrumentation; left-of-field electronics; decadent, Gainsbourg-style French pop; and the odd piece of whistling on just one track ("Felt Mountain"). "Oompa Radar" almost reaches Tom Waits heights of infamy from the way familiar instruments come together in such a simultaneously comforting and alienating style. The baroque "Paper Bag," meanwhile, uncannily recalls Joe Meek's toy-town visions of 1960s grandeur. All this and a seductive vocal to die for. --Everett True

This album is incredibly unique, almost like a genre of its own. I'm unsuccessfully looking for other pieces of music that gives the same mood for years. Even if you don't like it, you should hear it once in your life.

Felt Mountain is such a gorgeous slice of cinematic beauty. The atmosphere that is conjured up by the entire work is one of ethereal elsewhere. Enough people here have commented and tried to define it; suffice to say, it is a gem in a million that withstands eternal listening!

This album conjures to mind a maniacal circus, complete with death-defying stunts, twisted romance, and insane clowns. Mostly this works well. Just don't listen to it alone in your closet on a stormy night.

I first discovered Goldfrapp six, seven years ago on a now defunct music cable show. My curiousity was immediately piqued when I heard the beautiful melodies coupled with Allison Goldfrapp's fragile vocals. As much as I like Goldfrapp's current music, FELT MOUNTAIN remains my personal favorite Goldfrapp album of all time. The music is a mix of trip hop, classical, and jazz music. FELT MOUNTAIN sounds like it is the film score to an early James Bond film. One of my favorite songs on the album is "Human". It would be impossible to not hear the Shirley Bassey comparison in Allison's vocals on this particular track. Allison does a superior job over Amy Winehouse when it comes to channeling Shirley Bassey. Another favorite track is "Paper Bag" with the sparse melodies and Allison's delicate vocals. I like how subtle the trip hop beats are subtle and never takes over the song through out the entire album. Will Gregory allows Allison's vocals to take front and center. Unlike a lot of pop singers today, Allison never pounds the listener with her vocals. I can't believe it has been eight years since FELT MOUNTAIN has come out. The music still sounds fresh and new as the first time I listened to the album several years ago.

Sometimes you find a group of songs that create "that" kind of moments. For example, each time I listen to "pilots" (and mostly, all of the songs in this album) something beautiful is happening. It doesn't matter if I am at work or if I am just staring at the skies.
I had this one since its release date. But haven't pay enough attention until a couple of years after. I guess you have to find the right moment to enjoy it.
Sometimes I wish "Black Cherry" and "Supernature" where as fine as this one.
