great 2.1 home theater system November 24, 2008 Michael Mkala (Baltimore, MD) I bought this thing about 3 months ago. The sound is much better than what i was getting from my tv. I always used to wonder why john madden mumbled on sunday night football but now i can actually hear what he says. The virtual surround does not necessarily project sound behind you but it produces more details. For example in an explosion, you hear a lot of sound glass, nails chains you name it sounds that are usually drowned by tv speakers. As for the upconversion of video, it's rather good my dvds are much clearer than before. Great system for the price. Buy it already.
Look elsewhere - this thing sucks November 4, 2008 Cam Soper (Smithville, MO USA) As other reviewers have noted, the DVD drive fails commonly, as mine did. However, that really didn't bother me since the upscaled DVD picture quality was so lousy. I went back to using my Xbox 360 for DVD.
Also, there are very few options to adjust the sound output. Think the virtual center channel isn't loud enough? Think the virtual satellite channels are too loud? Too bad. This was particularly noticeable on games and movies with a rich 5.1 track. Sounds that were supposed to be auxiliary background noise would often drown out dialog or sound effects.
Seriously, don't buy this. If you want a 2.1 channel system, there are far better options. If, like me, you are buying a 2.1 channel system because you think your room isn't a good candidate for a 5.1 channel system, get creative. Maybe there are ways to mount your speakers or run your wires that you haven't thought of. In the end, no matter how "advanced" a 2.1 channel system is, they will never sound as good as a decent 5.1 channel system.
Low Price, Low Quality September 4, 2008 M. A. Schutt While "you get what you pay for" isn't always true...it is in this case. This system worked well (though I did have trouble with the HDMI in the beginning--could have been the interface on my television) for about a year. After that, it really started scratching my DVD's like crazy. Half the time, it won't release them upon pressing the eject button....I've had to pull them out by a tiny corner....hence, more scratching.
Also, this system was NEVER loud enough for me. I guess I need double the wattage (just a personal choice). I think it looks cheap and I prefer a drawer DVD/CD system to a slot, but at the low price....I guess I got a year of use from it. I will NOT be purchasing any Philips product in the future.
Every other DVD player I've owned (even the cheap versions)--Sony, Panasonic, Samsung---have lasted for many years, and are still going strong. I will now replace this unit with a blu-ray system run through a receiver.
Don't waste your $$ June 20, 2008 Mikhail Zilbergleyt (Rochester, NY) I have bought this system and for the first couple of months it was GREAT! The sound although not the best was very good for the $$.
BUT Now I am having problems with DVD player. It seems to have issues finding DVD root menue and chapters. The disk is just spinning with a very loud "seaking" sound and goes nowhere!!!
You are ordering a 6500 not a 6600 - BEWARE! April 22, 2008 Richie W (Los Angeles, CA) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I went on to Amazon and saw the HTS6600 for the great price of $249.99 so purchased it. It normally sells for $500+. I however received the older HTS6500 model. I had to return it and get a refund. BEWARE: You are really ordering the old model. The picture and details on the page are incorrect.
On closer look of the HTS6600 page, the specs and reviews are all for the HTS6500. It is some Amazon error where they have attached the wrong item and picture to the page.
