 Speakers not that good! November 23, 2008

The receiver is a nice piece of technology but the speakers are not up to the same level of excellence. I had a hard time getting the center speaker to project enough sound to make the system sound balanced. If I had just bought the receiver and used my old (unmatched by brand) speakers the sound would be better. I actually did get my old DCM center speaker and solved many of the problems. There was also a strange reverberation with the subwoofer and center speaker at certain loudness setting on the sub esp in "neural surround" setting.
The remote control and the DVD player worked great and the HDMI works well once you access the settings menu in the receiver and configure it correctly.
 Wii to Receiver to Projector and More October 29, 2008

If you are looking for a way to use your Wii with a home theater projector, probably the best way is to run your Wii through a home theater system like the Onkyo HT-SR 908. The problem that you have if you try to hook your Wii directly up to the projector is that there is no good place to put the sensor bar. With the home theater system, you plug the Wii into the home theater receiver which is generally in the front of the room. Put your sensor bar in the front of the room, then run the video cable from the receiver to the projector.
I shopped carefully to find an affordable system that had adequate video inputs for the present and future, with composite, S-Video, component and HDMI inputs and outputs. The 605 receiver in the HT-SP908 fits the bill.
Overall, the system works very well and does what it is supposed to do. For those considering a refurbished system, I can tell you that I bought mine refurbished, but you'd never know it, all cables and labels were included. I may eventually upgrade my speaker wires, but I'm using the wires that came with the system, and it really hasn't been a problem.
I have some nitpicks that weren't significant enough to deduct a full star - but almost. First, the remote has no light. Home theaters are dark, so the remote needs a light. Second, the speakers are not power efficient. You don't hear much until you turn it up to 50 (out of 100). Third: the system apparently does not upconvert signals that come through the component inputs. The component output feeds whatever component resolution you feed into it. (Don't worry about this too much, because your television or projector can probably upconvert the signal anyway.) As far as I can tell, you can't send an input source into the receiver via HDMI then output it via component cables.
Finally, I want to encourage HTIB manufacturers to incorporate HD-radio tuners. How long has HD-Radio been out, 5 years? Also, since a lot of buyers of HTIB systems use them with projectors, and projectors don't have tuners, it would be nice if manufacturers would include television (ATSC) tuners in their systems.

It is a decent HTIB system. It meets almost all my needs. The Audyssey 2EQ system made the setup very easy. The sound is much better than normal HTIB. The round shape speakers look nice.
There is a problems though. The receiver cannot receive pure audio signal, such as music CD, through HDMI if it is connected to TV also via HDMI and TV is not powered on. Using digital co-axis solved the issue. Another couple minor issues are the speaker wire is thin (but OK) and the battery for my DVD remote control was missing in the package.

The sound quality is good but the speakers are way too big. I have had a problem with my receiver. I just got it installed yesterday and the best buy agent who installed it said that one of the ports for the speaker is not working. Also the satellite agent was not able to get any reception from the HDMI. So I am waiting to see if this too is a problem with the receiver. I plan to call amazon to replace the receiver.

I read the other amazon reviews for this product, and I agree on most, specially those that rate it between 4 and 5 stars. My only gripe is that when I received it and installed it, after two weeks of enjoyment it stopped working; concerned, I troubleshoot and went online to see if other people had experienced the same problems I had (the system stopped sending HDMI image and sound to the TV, from HDMI input signals), and it resulted no solution existed rather than send it back to the original seller or to Onkyo themselves; I had to go through the (awesomely simple) amazon returns process, and after receiving the replacement, and setting it up, everything worked perfectly and I'm the happy owner of this great system.
I know it's not a high-end system, but for the budget I decided to spend in a HTIB system, and at the time of purchase, few options are better than this. I'm very satisfied with the functionalities, it's very future-proof and I happily recommend it to anyone interested.
