Amazon.com Product Description
Get everything you need to set up your surround sound home theater system with the powerful Yamaha DVX-C770BL, which offers 900 watts of total power output and a multi-format, 5-disc DVD player/receiver. It comes with a full set of stylishly compact 5.1-channel surround sound speakers, including a subwoofer, center channel, two fronts, and two surrounds. The DVD player is compatible with DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-R/RW, and SACD as well as files encoded as MP3, WMA, JPEG and DivX. It also includes an HDMI output for pure digital high-definition video and multi-channel surround sound via a single cable, as well as upscaling of DVD video to near HD quality.

The Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST) feature is a unique system in which the speaker and amplifier work together to cancel out impedance so the speaker unit has a perfectly linear motion. Advanced YST helps to ensure the highest levels of sound pressure and overall performance.

The subwoofer features a 6.5-inch woofer, while the center channel offers dual 3-inch woofers and a 3/4-inch Piezo tweeter. The front speakers have a 3.5-inch woofer and 0.75-inch tweeter, and the surrounds have a 3-inch woofer and 0.5-inch tweeter. Other features include multi-angle subtitle DVD playback, picture zoom, eight surround programs (four movie, four music), and a front-panel mini-jack for connecting a portable audio device.

The optional YDS-10 Universal Dock lets you connect your iPod to this receiver. You can listen to your iPod music and watch iPod images and movies on your monitor via the receiver. You can also operate your iPod via the receiver's remote unit with the On-Screen Display and charge your iPod. It's also XM Satellite Radio ready with the addition of the XM Connect and Play digital antenna accessory (sold separately, XM subscription required).

Tech Talk
DivX is a compressed digital video format (like MP3) that's based on the MPEG-4 video compression standard. It can reduce the video from a DVD (MPEG-2) to around 10 percent of its original size while still retaining good video and audio quality, enabling you to store several two-hour length movies on burned DVD media.

HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections.

What's in the Box
DVD/receiver, subwoofer, center channel speaker, two front speakers, two surround speakers, remote control (with batteries), FM and AM antennas, speaker cables, system control cable, printed operating instructions

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars excellent sound, some caveats   June 3, 2008

Note the previous reviewer comments, they are relevant as well. I purchased this HTIB at a very attractive price relative to the sound quality. I have not been disappointed. The speaker/ subwoofer/ amp setup do sound very good, clean and natural for a package at this price. What is now making it hard to use is the receiver panel readout. It was not very bright to begin with and now is virtually invisible. That means no feedback as to what is function, station, etc. I control by the remote and know pretty much what I need so it is still functional and great sounding. Since the problem is with the receiver however, there is no way to replace without also purchasing a new subwoofer. The satellite speakers can be used with any Home Theatre receiver. Be sure to request a replacement if the panel readout seems dim when you install - it will only get worse. If the readout is bright, chances are there is no flaw in your unit.

Heads up to anyone considering this product. The receiver/dvd player and subwoofer are connected via a proprietary cable, which means that one is useless without the other. Also, the subwoofer (not the receiver) supplies audio power for all channels. If the subwoofer dies, then you lose power to the satellites, too. And, because of the proprietary cabling, if either the subwoofer or receiver die, you can't replace them with another model, nor can you replace either with the the same model (Yamaha does not sell the receiver or the subwoofer except as part of this package). The subwoofer on mine was DOA and I was able to return it to the seller. If it happens to you after the warranty expires, good luck.
