Amazon.com After his debut album--The Dusty Foot Philosopher--took Canada by storm and collected a 2006 Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year, the pressure was on for K’Naan’s major label follow-up. Troubadour, in a word, delivers. Lyrically, the Somali ex-pat out-rhymes the majority of his native English-speaking counterparts with a mix of violent personal history and charismatic uplift, the occasional melodic chorus, and a voice that’s fairly compared to Eminem’s but more accurately recalls the upper-register nasality of Pharcyde’s Booty Brown. Pop-leaning cuts like “Dreamers” and “15 Minutes Away” duck in and out of instrumentals that borrow from Afrobeat (“Fire in Freetown”), a world/soul sound that hits its apex in the gorgeous “Wavin’ Flag,” and hip-hop’s best use yet of a Bob Marley sample (opener “T.I.A.”). Recorded at Marley’s legendary Tuff Gong studio in Jamaica, the album gets a heavy dose of collaborative energy from such diverse contributors as Mos Def, Chubb Rock, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine (“Bang Bang”), and Metallica’s Kirk Hammett (“If Rap Gets Jealous”). In a year that has already seen an early girth of really strong rap releases that eschew the superficial violence, misogyny, and inanity of most radio fare, Troubadour stands as a front-runner for Hip-Hop Album of the Year. --Jason Kirk
Album Description 2009 release. Recorded primarily in Kingston, Jamaica where K'Naan was granted unprecedented access by his friends Stephen and Damian Marley to their father Bob Marley's original home studio at 56 Hope Road and the legendary Tuff Gong studios Troubadour is a Hip Hop album like no other. K'Naan successfully blends samples and live instrumentation for a sound that's both rooted in traditional African melodies and the classic Hip Hop tradition. Features Kirk Hammett of Metallica on the song 'If Rap Gets Jealous'.

Love it August 8, 2010 A. Gray (Los Angeles,CA) From first track of T.I.A. to the last of "People like me" each track was a joy to listen to. K'naan's music was both fun and socially conscious. The CD had a good mix of musical textures, that were placed together well. Thanks to this album I'm now a proud K'naan fan.
Wow August 3, 2010 Dee 1st CD in a looooonnnnngggg time that I can truly cay I enjoy(ed) every track and didn't just skip to my favorite one or two. Nicely done. Lyrics are great, poetry and life spit into flowing words. Overall really like(d) it.
'eh July 22, 2010 Melkor (San Diego, CA USA) I got this CD for free to review. Unfortunately, this is going to be a very middling review. When I love something I can expound for paragraphs why I feel passionate about it. When I hate something, I try to find creative ways to spew my venom. K'naan is o.k. It simply didn't speak to me. It's not bad hip hop (of which there's an abundance). At the same time, I didn't feel like I was getting anything new or inspiring on a lyrical or musical level. Take it or leave it. Might be your thing, but it wasn't mine.
5 year old loves Wave Your Flag May 17, 2010 R. Musick (Los Angeles, CA) Unlike others who made comments about Amazon censoring lyrics, I appreciate the 'CLEAN' version of this album because my 5 year old LOVES 'Wavin' Flag' and I'm sure he will listen to the other songs and dance to them w/out knowing what the words truly mean, so I rather have him listen w/out all the F and N words for now. THANK YOU for the clean version!
Spectacular K'naan (Canaan) the land of milk & honey May 8, 2010 ZANZIBAR (Diaspora) K'naan's album is a much needed shot in the arm of a music medium that is stale and lacks any kind of knew creativity. K'naan infuses a hard rock edge in songs like "If rap gets jealous". The rock guitar arrangement is on the money. The introspective songs are "Wavin Flag" & "Somalia" "When I try to see, I see coffins closing" which I would say is nationalistic also (five pointed star blue backfield).
The song "Take a minute" is kind of biographical and dedicated to his mother "Dear Africa you help me write this by showing me to give is priceless". The song "People like me" is a soulful commentary. "15 miinutes away" is a song that gives insight on the grind in being an artist. Another favorite of mine is "I came prepared" with Damian Marley they do their thing well together. On the song "Bang Bang" K'naan I dare say sounds a little too much like M & M. The song "Fatima" is a sweet ode to a girl with the name of an Islamic icon. My favorite song not only on the album but for the entire year thus far is "Fire and Freedom" its simply a spectacular song that gives off positive energy with an incredible beat. Like I said song of the year. To hear it is to move to it. The disc is solid from begining to end and well recommended. Interesting choice of name and title of C.D. Troubadour is that "travelling man". K'naan produced a C.D. that can be called the "land of milk and honey" of the music world (Canaan).
