Off the hook - together they are a force to be reckoned with! August 19, 2008 R. Lopez (DC) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
When i purchased this disk - I wasn't prepared for what I got. I knew any beats by 9th wonder would be head bangers - but the lyrics were just as memorable.
Worth full value as so few cd's are these days.
Finally, Jeanius has arrived! August 18, 2008 Daniel Aguilar Jr. (Las Cruces, NM) With Jean Grae on Talib Kweli's Blacksmith Label, fans doubted whether Talib would be able to release the much downloaded Jeanius album. Thankfully, he came through. With producer 9th Wonder on most of the tracks, Jean doesn't dissapoint lyrically.
ridiculously dope August 17, 2008 J. Williams (Riverside, CA) I reviewed a few other Jean releases on here, and as always she doesn't disappoint. Which next to no artists with more than 2 albums could claim. 9th Wonders beats are tight, lyrically Jean is as sharp as ever. She is able to go from humorous punchlines to some dark and depressing ish in a blink of an eye. "Don't Rush Me" is a simply amazing song about a female who has an abortion and is battling over her feelings of regret. Jean is amazing at painting a picture with words. The song makes me think and I can't help but wonder if it's really just a song, or is she talking about herself? The opening lines "f I could swim a thousand lakes to bring your life back I'd write that, but infinity can't rewind facts" Very haunting. Weather she's speaking from personal experience or not, the song is very sad and powerful as hell.
She can spit battle raps, she can tell vivid stories, she can go deep. Her flow is effortless and beautiful. There are too many good songs on here to really go into detail - unless I was to write a 5 page review. I will just use the song about abortion as an example of how incredible this lady is.
I want to give this 4 1/2 stars, I don't think it deserves 5, but it deserves more than 4! I've heard rumors she's retired from the rap game - I HOPE this isn't true! If it is we lost one of the best. Jean if you read this and you put the mic away, COME BACK! Hip-Hop needs your presence.
Return of the Jean August 14, 2008 J. Johnson (Minneapolis MN) Baby. Baby. Baby. You don' did it to me again Jean. I swear, there ain't a thang of yours that I've listened to and wasn't feeling it. Plus, it just gets better and better(you're new album title). I have all of your stuff baby so just keep it coming. When are going to re-release "Attack of the Attacking Things?" I hate that I had to burn that album, but I wasn't up on you then. I hope that you're coming to Minneapolis soon because I want to get the first picture. 9th was a good thing for you. You're already tight, but you and 9th together. DAMN!!! 9th I don't care what ya'll say. I'll be expecting the reunion album in 2010, and I know you know who I'm talking about. Anyways, luv you Jean, and for that sucka Greg H with the 2 star review. You're supposed to rate the album, not what it looks like. A professor of mine once said, "Most critics have no talent." Peace, Love, and Soooooooooul!!!!
Right To The Point....SHE'S DOPE! August 13, 2008 D. Powell (New York City) She's the dopest female emcee I've heard since MC Lyte and that's saying alot...a straight spitter who's not scared....and over 9th's beats this is a 5 star moment....rather than discuss everything in overly boring details, I would recommend that you pick it up if you like and respect female emcee's who really can spit and you like your beats real head noddable and hip-hop....this is one of the stronger efforts for 2008 and there has already been some good efforts released...certainly in the top 5 released so far..you can tell she's "old" school..."golden age" oriented, because she pays tribute to a few classic album covers with 9th as her partner....Public Enemy...Das Efx and a few more...in the vain of that type of REAL hip-hop this is a refreshing release....GET IT NOW....this is some new hip-hop for 2008!
