A Great Album Made Even Better! December 16, 2008 Barron Crist (Somewhere, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Released in 1987 (hence the title), this was one of Whitesnake's best releases of the eighties though I still prefer 1980's "Ready An' Willing". The band was critisized for being a poor mans Led Zeppelin and the video for "Still Of The Night" shows guitarist Adrian Vandenberg using a violen bow on his guitar (like Zep's Jimmy Page) but for the most part I felt the band had their own unique brand of rock. Ex-Deep Purple vocalist David Coverdale sings with passion on this release and he along with guitarist John Syke's (ex-Tygers Of Pan Tang) really make this album smoke. Standouts include "Still Of The Night", "Give Me All Your Love", "Bad Boys", "Is This Love", "Here I Go Again", and "You're Gonna Break My Heart Again". For those interested, the band's tour lineup for "Whitesnake 1987" was different than the studio lineup. The tour lineup included David Coverdale on vocals, Adrian Vandenberg on guitar, Vivian Campbell on guitar, Rudy Sarzo on bass and Tommy Aldridge on drums. The studio lineup included David Coverdale on vocals, John Sykes on guitar, Neil Murray on bass and Aynsley Dunbar on drums. For 2007, this excellent cd has been remastered and sonically it's far better than the older unremastered version. One thing I noticed right away is the tracklist is different from the U.S. version. I never owned the import version of the album or cd so I'm assuming this was the correct tracklist for the European version. Also, the American cd has nine tracks and this import has eleven (this is not counting the bonus tracks). The four bonus tracks "Give Me All Your Love", "Is This Love", "Here I Go Again" and "Still Of The Night" are taken from the cd "Live...In The Shadow Of The Blues". They are played to perfection although the sound quality is not as good as their studio counterparts. The second disc is a DVD in the PAL (European) format so it will not play in most dvd players but my inexpensive Cyberhome dvd player had no problem playing it. The dvd includes the videos of "Still Of The Night", "Here I Go Again 87", "Is This Love" and "Give Me All Your Love". It doesn't end here because you get the same four songs taken from the dvd "Live...In The Still Of The Night" as well. The entire cd package is very nice with colorfull photos of the band memebers as well as a rather lengthy booklet. It all fits into a clear plastic case with Collectors Edition printed on the bottom left hand corner. I purchased mine in Europe at a fraction of what Amazon sells it for, so shop around. A must have for Whitesnake fans and/or lovers of 80's rock.
Well Worth Waiting 20 years June 12, 2008 Betty Bubbles (Los Angeles, CA United States) I decided to buy this special edition to replace my cassette tape of 1987 (U.S. Version) from 20 some years ago. This turned out to be such an excellent replacement. Comes with so much more than just the remastered album. I particularly enjoyed the DVD and 2 additional tracks from the originally released European version of the album. The other reviewer said DVD wouldn't work for US region, but it played fine on my standard JVC $100 DVD player. I highly recommend this special edition, especially, if you don't already own their recent releases such as Live in the shadow of the blues CD or Live in the Still of the Night DVD.
DVD will not play , beware !! November 9, 2007 Peter J. Buonanno (Cary, NC) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Purchased the collectors edition of this wonderful CD and could not wait to view the DVD , but forget it , DVD is not viewable on players in the states. For the CD , excellent sound quality over the original CD and the packaging of this edition is very impressive.
