Album Description Capturing a perfect blend of both melodic beauty and spine-bending rock, this album will appeal to anyone who desires a truly unique sound. With a powerful reputation backing the intensity of their live performances and armed with a killer release, Western Australia's biggest buzz band are set to conquer in 2007.
Album Description Australian pressing. After forming in 1998 Karnivool are by no means newcomers to the local music scene in Perth, however, it has been a long time coming for the release of their debut album, Themata. The album was recorded during the majority of last year in Melbourne after the band made a similar move to bands before them, such as good mates Full Scale. Independent. 2005.

Pleasantly surprised February 10, 2008 five-6-kilo (DE United States) I heard Shutterspeed online and thought I'd better check them out. What a good idea.. I'm very glad I did.
I've heard the CD about 8 times now, and I am amazed at how polished the band, and the production sounds. I've read other reviews about how they sound like Tool, but I cant go the same route. I have a few Tool CD's, and it is my impression that Tool's music is heavier, darker and brooding. I found Karnivool to be a bit more on the rock side, with more emphasis on the clarity of sound. If anything, they sort of reminded me of a heavier Dream Theatre.
Every song has a lot to offer, and as mentioned before, they switch the beats up quite a bit...which is good. I love the swirling guitars and the vocals are right in line with the music. Unfortunately, the guitars and vocals are so good, I hardly realized they have a drummmer/bass player (try telling me you never hear Tool's drummer DC).
Something just sounds right about this group.
Fantastic! January 13, 2008 J. McCurdy (Minnesota) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I first heard this band on Pandora and, as other reviewers mentioned, I feared they were a one-good-track band. Then I kept hearing more of them and liked each song better than the last. Today I finally bought the whole album and I've been thoroughly impressed. Excellent range, consistent sound but with several different musical ideas. Every now and then they do sound like someone else (Breaking Benjamin, Stabbing Westward, even Faith No More sometimes), but they just do it better, with more polish and proficiency.
Drums are excellent, vocals are wide-ranging in emotion and delivery and never seem pretentious or strained, the guitar and bass both contribute to the sound and blend so well that at first you won't notice how good they are.
Awesome! January 9, 2008 Bob Chan (SoCal) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This band blew me away when I first heard their CD a few months ago. The album is, top to bottom, a killer hard rock record. Probably my favorite hard rock record of the last few years.
The highest compliment I can pay them is to say they are the first band to UNINTENTIONALLY remind me of Tool. They aren't trying to sound like Tool, and yet I can't help but make the comparison because they are just so good.
Also, this album was independently produced and recorded, giving it an extra kick of awesomeness. Consequently its not as "loud" as other modern hard rock, but thats fine by me, because it has subtle musicianship and atmosphere. You wouldn't complain that you're 20 year old single malt scotch doesn't taste like Jager, would you? Of course you wouldn't.
The bottom line is that you need to buy this record. Go ahead. I'll wait.
Great Aussie Band December 16, 2007 Grant Colthup (Sydney, Australia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found out about these guys through a friend and picked up the cd. I was lucky enough to then go see them live 2 weeks later and let me say I was not disappointed with their live act either. Karnivool produce an album that is solid the whole way through and the first three songs are brilliant.
If you enjoy this cd I can also highly recommend Butterfly Effect - Imago, Full Scale - Self Titled and Cog as three other terrific Aussie metal groups
2 Years in CD Player and still devouring it August 27, 2007 Brian Ward (Perth, Western Australia) I rate this album in my top 10 albums of all time along the international "superstars" with no hesitation. It has not left my CD player for the 2 years I've owned it and I don't see it leaving any time soon. I cannot recommend this album enough to anyone remotely interested in music in general. I can see where people say they are influenced by Tool, but this much more than a simple Australian version of that band. The only way I'd say they are like Tool is in that their vocalist, Ian Kenny, just has one of those voices which is hard to fault no matter what style he is singing.
Buy the album, see them when they come to your town and be inspired.
