Amazon.com The ultimate diehard rock band returns with a collection that at times recalls Skynyrd in their prime, but won't prompt anyone to forget the fabled, ill-fated lineup of yore. By now, three members remain from the classic '70s Skynyrd (guitarist Gary Rossington, keyboardist Billy Powell, and bassist Leon Wilkeson); vocalists Johnny Van Zant and Dale Krantz-Rossington certainly qualify as stalwarts, having been with the bunch since their 1987 reformation. Blackfoot alumni Ricky Medlocke and former Outlaw Hughie Thomasson round out the three-guitars-strong frontline, and hired-gun drummer Kenny Arnoff lays a rock-solid foundation, so LS '99 doesn't lack for instrumental muscle. The problem lies in the material. Fallen frontman Ronnie Van Zant wasn't exactly an artful lyricist, but his blunt statements had a way of landing like a solid uppercut. The descendants to Skynyrd warhorses such as "Saturday Night Special" and "Gimme Three Steps" found here, however, aren't going to knock anyone for a loop. You like guitars that travel in packs, Skynyrd's still a good bet. You like enduring rock songs, return to the source. --Steven Stolder

Album Art December 4, 2007 D.G.J. (Nashvegas) Great southern rock at it's best. The inside cover art on this was awesome! Too bad it wasn't on the outside! XD
Lynyrd Skynyrd - A Good Album From The Modern Version Of The Band September 13, 2007 Steven Sly (Kalamazoo, MI United States) More than 20 years after the plane crash that took the life of 2 members of the band a modern version of Lynyrd Skynyrd got back together at the end of the 80's. A decade later they put out this new studio album. Original members Billy Powell, Leon Wilkinson, and Gary Rossington are joined by a veritable southern rock all star band featuring Ronnie's brother Johnny on vocals, Former Blackfoot (and very early Skynyrd member) Rickey Medlocke on guitar, former Outlaws member Hughie Thomasson on guitar, and former John Mellencamp (and others) drummer Kenny Arnoff on drums, and Former Rossinton Collins band vocalist Dale Krantz Rossington on background vocals. Although the album gets a bit too close to modern country in spots, for the most part, this is a strong album. "Preacher Man", "Edge Of Forever", "Through It All", "Rough Around The Edges" and "FLA" are all very good tunes and carry the album. Songs like "Workin" and "Gone Fishin" are a bit too countryfried for my ears, but I am sure there are a lot of people out there that will like them. Johnny Van Zant is a decent vocalist and of course with the trio of Collins, Medlocke, and Thomasson on guitars there are plenty of meaty riffs to sink your teeth into. Overall this is a very good modern southern rock album. People who have only been exposed to the 70's version of Skynyrd might want to check this out; I think they would enjoy it.
Worthwhile December 19, 2006 joseph (fla) A little late but got this one a couple years back. First off this is great drinking music. This in my opinion is there best non Ronnie albums. Johnnie does his brother proud mean streets is one of there best songs to date. Fla another high energy song. Preacher man somewhat radio friengly. Gone Fishing another treat. Bottom line those songs stick out. Songs like rough around the edges partly about Ron, and tommorrows goodbye are ones that dont stick out but after a while they prove to be as good or better.
Better than "Skynyrd 91" but still, nothin Stands out May 29, 2005 Mat Priester (Beaufort, SC) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
First of all I'm a huge Skynyrd fan.But nothing stands out in this album, the only reason Johnny Van Zant was able to get in on the whole rock singer thing is because of his brother. And another thing Johnny isnt nearly as good as Ronnie. Buy Per-Nounced instead.
The Best One After The Crash March 12, 2005 Gregory Masciola (Carol Stream, IL USA) This album is just great! It is without a doubt the absolute best album the band has put out since the crash. Just about every song on this album deserves a 5/5. "Gone Fishin'" and "Money Back Guarantee" are the only 2 songs that I would call filler. "FLA" is OK, but not as good as the rest (I give this one 3.5/5). Everything else is a masterpiece. The best songs I would say are "Workin'", "Edge Of Forever", "Mean Streets", & "GWTTG (Get it While the Gettin's Good)", just to name a few. If you're a huge die-hard Lynyrd Skynyrd fan, you'll love this album. If you hate Lynyrd Skynyrd and can't stand them.......................... You'll love this album! I just wish they would play more of the songs from this album in concert. And to the reviewer above me: It's fine if you don't like Johnny Van Zant, but you and so many others need to stop coming down on him just because he's not Ronnie!
