Product Description Peter Salett s ambitious fifth album, In the Ocean of the Stars puts the spotlight on a strikingly original artist who has amassed an impressive body of work essentially behind the scenes and below the radar. A sprawling tour de force that moves seamlessly between folk-rooted intimacy and all-out symphonic grandeur, the album takes its place alongside such landmarks of visionary contemporary music as Nick Drake s Five Leaves Left, Randy Newman s Sail Away and Beck s Sea Change.

Such a great album! October 9, 2008 J. Sink (Raleigh, NC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I first discovered Peter Salett on the soundtrack to the 2005 release of Down in the Valley with Edward Norton. The drifter, Harlan, could easily be songwriter Peter Salett traveling the West composing tunes of love & longing along the way. "Sunshine" and "Fly Sparrow Fly" from the soundtrack blew me away when I first heard them. At the time, they were unavailable on an album. With a release date almost three years later, In the Ocean of the Stars has been a long time coming.
The wait was worthwhile to get it right. Although I'd have been satisfied with ten more steel-string acoustic ballads, Salett mixed in a full repertoire of other instruments. Various strings and keys appear on the track list. At times, the sound is similar to 90's-era Cracker with occasional hints of Johnny Cash.
For me, Salett paints a mystical, yearning perspective of the world. These tunes are all quite affected in an emotional sense. They'll make you think of someone special.
