Product Description The Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio was a true revolution in the classical world in the US when it was firs released on LP in 1976 . Firstly because Claude Bolling had the idea of mixing the greatest musical movement of the 20th century - jazz - with classical music. America's appreciation of this cross-breeding raised the Suite to head the hit-parade for two years and to be ranked in the Billboard for 10 years (530 weeks). Through this work, Claude Bolling can be considered as the creator of 'crossover music'. His musical partner, Jean-Pierre Rampal, is now esteemed as the great classical flautist of the 20th century.

Great Album April 16, 2010 Richard E. Hanson (Mill Creek, WA) This is one of Bolling's first suites with a featured instrument along with jazz piano. I think it is one of his best and Rampal is so magnificent on the flute. I was captivated the first time I heard it played live and immediately went out and purchased it. I originally had this on a cassette. It deteriorated over time and I went to replace it on CD. I was so dissapointed when I learned it was OOP & not available anywhere. However, a few weeks ago I went on line and saw that it had been re-released on CD and I bought it immediately. It is such a great work of classical jazz. If you're in to this style of music, it is a must for your collection. Two thumbs up.
The Music Studio Meets The Street February 8, 2010 Derry Etkins (GuyBarTola) I got into "Classical Music" backwards, so to speak, having played by ear in pop and Jazz bands before taking lessons in piano. Maybe because of this, I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Some friends of mine who had the Classical training before I did, could not relate .... thanx Edith B., for introducing me to Claude Bolling.
A very delicate balance between the Classical idiom and Jazz, the music in this collection could very easily be thought to be totally improvised. Heavily influenced by music from all over the world, it still has enough musical integrity and makes enough technical demands to merit inclusion in "jury repertoire", for ensemble evaluation.
Lessons in composition could be learnt here ....
GO, Claude!!
Great record, still holds up after 30+ yrs January 31, 2010 George Tirebiter I wish they had retained the original liner notes in the CD reissue. In them, they discussed how people who heard it at the record company before release were highly enthused regardless of their musical taste. ("Crossover appeal' might be the buzzphrase today.) It is still true; it is a great blend of classical and jazz styles and the intrusive hiss is gone in the remastered version. I had forgotten about this album but was reminded of it somehow recently and was glad I was. It was like running into an old friend again.
A wonderful and original composition April 27, 2009 Jason P. Gold (Long Beach, CA) This album contains the first pairing of flautist Jean Pierre Rampal and composer and jazz musician Claude Bolling. Rampal is renowned as the premier classical flautist. Bolling has received acclaim and awards as a composer, conductor, arranger and pianist.
The album contains some truly original and exciting jazz fusion. But where some great jazz requires an advanced degree in music to appreciate, this album is accessible. Yet, it is not the elevator jazz played on new age stations. It is more akin to The Dave Brubeck Five than Swing, the complex strains of Chick Corea or the the soft tones of Kenny G.
The album is aptly named. A Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio is exactly what is here. The album contains seven related, but contrasting songs. Tha album has a jazz underpinning over which Bolling and Rampal intertwine the classical flute with and jazz stylings. Sometimes, the music is of the counterpoint style, where the jazz piano and the classical flute have a discourse, each in its own style, but following the same musical theme. At other times, the two play the same melody in unison, yet continue to maintain their own style. And at other times, the flute and piano switch stylistic roles. Unique and enjoyable, this album is well worth listening to.
A jazz smoothie March 23, 2009 J. Dito (Sebastopol, CA USA) I first purchased this album back in 1977, after i heard the music wafting out of a neighbor's window and had to have it! then a friend bought me the cd, however, it was the re-make of the album and the music was not the same. so i finally got this one and it is the best. i play it all the time, and i am still moved to tears of joy each time i hear Sentimentale. These two musicians blend their talents to create some of the most beautiful, soothing and dynamic music in the world. you'll love it.
