Discover how good radio can sound

  • HD Radio is a Digital technology that allows a radio station to transmit more information in the same radio wave, enabling higher quality sound and additional content. HD Radio technology makes AM Stations have FM Station-like sound quality, while FM Stations are broadcast with CD-like sound quality.

  • Unlike typical FM or AM transmission, HD Radio has crystal clear reception with low noise and no audio distortion.

More content, more listening options with Multicasting

  • Multicasting allows more channels to be accessed from your radio dial. HD Radio multicast channels can be listened to only by an HD Radio enabled stereo such as the KD-HDR50. These "Stations In Between the Stations" contain additional format options, music genre and talk radio options, and even experimental formats that have, until now, never been heard through other radio broadcast mediums.

  • HD Radio broadcasting is completely free of charge--there are no monthly plans or subscription costs for this unique and exciting content.

  • National coverage areas--HD Radio content is currently available in close to 200 major markets currently and rapidly expanding. For more information or to find HD Radio stations near you, log on to mobile.jvc.com or www.hdradio.com.

iTunes Tagging
iTunes Tagging allows users to store or "tag" information about that song they are hearing on HD Radio and store it in their receiver. The tagged song information will transfer to their iPod/iPhone and be recalled in iTunes allowing them the option to purchase that song from the iTunes store. How it works:

  1. When you hear a song you like on the radio, press the "TAG" key to save the information on the headunit.
  2. Information is transferred to your iPod when you connect to the headunit.
  3. Information is transferred to iTunes when you sync your iPod to your computer.
  4. The song shows up on the "Tagged" playlist in iTunes.
  5. Click on the button to purchase the song from the iTunes Store.
  6. Enjoy the music!

Conventional Radio
Of course, sometimes you'll want to tune into non-HD content, so you can also dial in standard AM/FM stations. Tune into your favorite stations instantly with 18 FM and 6 AM presets (all of which can be used for HD stations if you choose).

CDs and More
The KD-HDR50 also features a CD player, which will play your favorite CDs and CD-R/RWs.

What's more, you can burn an MP3 or WMA disc and enjoy hours of audio complete with ID3 tagging for displaying track information.

USB Port
Stream MP3/WMA files from USB thumb drives and other devices via the included USB port.

iPod Connectivity
You can also operate your iPod via the USB port. Control your iPod/iPhone from either the player itself or from the receiver's controls, while allowing song and artist information display, play, pause, skip, or back commands from either device.

Input and Output
Two pairs of preamp outputs are provided for system expansion if you want to add a little more power to the KD-HDR50's onboard 50W x 4 amplifier.

A 3.5mm front panel auxiliary input is also included for use with iPods, MP3 players, or other external audio devices.

Room to Grow
The KD-HDR50's is a great system, but there's room to expand your options. Add JVC modules for Bluetooth, CD changers or SAT Radio to take your system to the next level.

Wireless Remote
A full-featured wireless remote is include for controlling receiver functions.

5 out of 5 stars Great radio if you stick with the stock.   March 19, 2010
K. Culp (Iowa City, IA)
This was not bought at Amazon, but at a specialty store that installs. For the novice, recommend installation so I can't comment here on problems others are having if they did install it themselves. I put it in a 2004 "SUV" - Santa Fe - taking out a double-din factory radio and replaced with this and a storage bin. This required a antenna adapter, wiring harness, and the double-din tray (bottom used as a storage bin). The vendor was reasonable to work with - many will install a radio if you buy it here and take it into the repair shop.

There's a bit of frustration here in station memory/recall, but it isn't that difficult. I guess the reason is it is frustrating is that the face of the unit is taken up with a USB and external audio port. For the HD radio, this is hands-down the best value if you are looking also to play MP3s either from the iPod or a USB memory stick. You can also play MP3s from a CD if you make a data disk.

This unit gets expensive if you start adding the rear iPod adapter (you can use the front one), sat radio, and blue tooth. If you stick with the stock model, that is the best value. I put the iPod (I've got the 3 different models including the nano 2G, iPod Touch 2G, and iPod 60 GB 3G and all work fine). These iPods don't charge while plugged in though - just plays files. I can see play lists, genre, albums, etc - all without the iPod accessory for the rear. You don't get the album cover on the display. I guess when you do use the front you have the iPod cable sticking out - but that is the only disadvantage.

Haven't tried to the USB memory port yet. But, I bought a little 4GB and will dump mp3s on that stick. Some have said they didn't know what order the unit was playing the files. I'll experiment with it, but don't really care.

Be advised on the display, only one line cycles through the artist, song, album on both mp3 and HD radio, you can change it though so it says it only "once" if you want (really there are lots of control settings here, my guess is that the less "techy" person is struggling with the features a bit). HD radio has a option to tune in digital or analog, some have been frustrated with that feature. If you set it to "digital only" it will drop the station when you don't have the signal strength. But, there's an "auto" setting that will hang on to it as a analog signal if you wish. Again, it is your choice and don't blame the radio.

The iPod tagging feature works great - it is a way to grab the title of the song while listening and order on iTunes. No text from the HD station (I've got a station that does it, don't ask me why) means no tagging.

Reception is excellent, no interference and we get the same number of stations on the FM band as before with the factory radio, but now HD channels. I don't know if it is worth it if you live in a rural area as we only have about 4 channels in HD in our city, but pays off when you are on the road.

I like it, don't see any real problems at all.

4 out of 5 stars Good for the Money but Poor Control Design   March 14, 2010

I wanted a car stereo that had a good HD receiver, a USB port and a Bluetooth option without having to do major under-dash surgery to supply the add-ons. The price on this unit is great and the sound is fine with my 2005 factory Scion xB speakers. By cranking the bass on the "User" EQ profile I can get an acceptable sound for pop, acoustic, rock and classical music. I installed the JVC Bluetooth unit along with it.

THE GOOD
The HD receiver is excellent. HD stations that my Sony HD radio has trouble with are easily captured with this unit. I experience none of the hiss that another review complained of; the unit has a very quiet noise floor. As with every other AM radio, standard AM sound is crappy but HD AM stations are clean and clear. The many colors are fun to play with and the self-adjusting clock is very nice. I installed the Bluetooth adapter which interfaces well on this unit. I had intended to use the Bluetooth stereo feature to stream music from my iPhone to the car stereo but the USB interface has such better sound that I use this instead. While connected via USB the iPhone recharges and it can be operated by the stereo head unit (Head Mode) or by the iPhone itself (iPhone Mode). Having a remote control is nice for back seat teens when the fader is pushed to the back speakers.

THE BAD
The LCD is angled for flat, back-facing mounting; it is meant to be viewed from above the unit. Since the xB's dash slopes slightly the LCD angled wrong and is junked up with non-illuminated reflective pixels. I am six feet tall but my shorter fiance can barely read the LCD from her height. The unit is made to be used with a subwoofer and the sound without it is a little light on the bass. My previous head unit using the same speakers was capable of very strong bass so this is clearly a design choice on JVC's part. As another review mentioned the lack of a loudness control -- which would fix much of this -- is a bummer.

THE UGLY
This unit is not friendly to operate. Let me repeat that. THIS UNIT IS NOT FRIENDLY TO OPERATE. I have spent many years operating vast music synthesizer menus using only a 32 character display with three control buttons, but this design is worse. Many common tasks require operating no less than three controls and navigating menus up to three layers deep. The remote control makes some of this easier but now you are switching between two control units depending upon which functions work better with which controls. Operating this head unit while driving will cause some people to have an accident, I have no doubt. The controls are placed and marked in a way that is thoughtless and unintuitive.

SUMMARY
I am happy that I chose this unit but I will do plenty of shopping around for my next car stereo unless JVC has done some work to create a more intuitive user interface. It looks like they gave the job of designing control functions and menu design to someone's nephew rather than a designer with human factors training. On the other hand the unit sounds clear and strong (if a bit weak in the bass). The tuner is great, the USB port and iPhone interface is great, the remote is a nice extra and the Bluetooth add-on is great. The colors are nice and the thing looks and sounds very good. Four stars.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Radio/Awesome Price   March 4, 2010
M. Savaglio (Los Angeles, CA, USA)
I've accuatly been shopping around for a new head unit for a long time (got tired of my stock GM am/fm only one). After much research I decided this was the best choice as far as price and features. Sure other head units out there might have higher output watts...etc...etc... but lets be honest, hardcore audio buffs would be using amps and nice speakers anyway.

Some of my favorite features of this head unit are the IPOD-USB direct connection, HD Radio with the ability to Store 16 preset stations, and the ability to choose the display color.

I hooked in my IPOD, grabbed the remote provided, and never had to reach for a radio dial/button again.

Some words of warning, be sure to check if your IPOD's Generation is supported by the USB. Also, when installing into my truck, I had purchase antenna adapter. Finally, due to GM's brillant plan to run all the warning chimes through the factory original radio, I had to purchase an additional GM Chime Retention Device.

You should try disconnecting the wiring harness from the back of your orginal radio first, then test if your warning chimes still work. This might save you some greef if your like me and tend to leave your keys in the ignition or your dome light on.
