Amazon.com On their full-length debut, Denver quartet the Fray don't exactly reinvent the wheel, but those looking for melodic, mid-tempo pop could do far worse. That said, the 12 songs on Top 40 hit How To Save a Life are barely distinguishable from each other. If you like one, you'll probably like the rest (and you'll be in the company of thousands of other listeners.) If you don't like one, it's unlikely the others will change your mind. Formed in 2002 and signed by Epic in 2004, the band consists of Isaac Slade (vocals, piano), Joe King (guitar, vocals), Ben Wysocki (drums), and Dave Welsh (guitar). Since their formation, the Fray have elicited comparisons to British groups like Coldplay and Keane, and American ones like Counting Crows and the Wallflowers. They've also toured with Weezer and Ben Folds and had songs--like first single "Over My Head (Cable Car)"--featured on such popular programs as Grey's Anatomy. Though they incorporate guitar, unlike Keane, Slade's expert piano playing is prominent on every track. To his credit, he can also hit the high notes just as gracefully as Coldplay's Chris Martin, but therein lies the rub: As with the band as a whole, Slade hasn't quite found his own voice yet. How To Save a Life is polished and professional, bland and inoffensive. It goes down easy, but evaporates into the ether just as quickly. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Nothing new. October 13, 2008 j-rog (L.A., Ca) Yes they have some catchy tunes, but this record is unbearably unoriginal. This music is best suited for a tv drama, rolling in during the scene where the doctor makes a grand effort to save both the mother and the infant in a complicated pregnancy, only to come so close but one dies (in fact I think scrubs had a similar scene); or when the teacher tries so hard to turn her no-good students straight, but one of them ends up dying right after they shape up. I don't much like their music.
Strong Debut September 15, 2008 W. Dietrich (Las Vegas) This is a solid but not great album. The two main singles are Over My Head and How to Save a Life. Both songs got alot of airplay and will be familar to any buyer of this album. I imagine in 10 years from now How to Save a Life will still be played. The problem that I have with this album is it sounds too polished and too commercial it missing the raw sound of an up and coming band. It is great back background music and is worth the money (less than $9 what a great deal) it will make a great addition to any collection.
Best CD I've ever heard August 2, 2008 Fray Lover I don't even know where to begin. This is definitely the best CD I have heard in a long time. I got this album after hearing the song "Over My Head" on the radio, and instantly fell in love. Every single song on this album is unique and it really highlights how talented these four young men are. I recommend this album to anyone who likes good music! It is worth the money! I can't wait for their upcoming album, which will be out pretty soon!!
The Fray CD Review July 28, 2008 JAK Chicago I have had this CD for a few months now and I have also loaded it into my IPOD. This CD is one of my favorites and I listen to it quite frequently. Many of the songs, although not popular on the radio, are not to be missed on this CD.
How Do You Save This CD? July 22, 2008 Lindsey 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I bought this CD, I knew and loved their three singles: How to Save a Life, Over My Head (Cable Car), and Look After You. I thought "hey, I love these songs, the cd is surely full of gems like these!" But when I got home and listened to it, every song sounded the same. Same piano, slow tempo, sad, sensitive lyrics. I literally wasn't even sure if a new song had begun or not without checking what track it was on. In the end, I wish I'd just bought the 3 songs I already liked-- there was nothing else that stood out to me on the cd. It's fine, it's nice, it's calming... but it's boring, too.
