This is one of the best av i ever heard in a while price was very hard to beat i actually compare the 154 model at frys to yamaha, denon, onkyo, sony and this low end av blow them out the park i even compare it to the higher end models and this av holds its own not bad HK. I like yamaha, but HK got the edge.

4 out of 5 stars Great sound, but HK needs to hire good coders and needs some new management   March 3, 2009

I've had this receiver for over a year now, this being my 3rd HK receiver (AVR-125, AVR-235). As usual the sound quality is top notch, I don't even need to explain it further. The problem areas are related to the software. Seems like HK has great hardware guys, but needs to invest in hiring some quality software people. When I first bought it there were some major flaws in the firmware (LFE channel being 10dB lower than it's supposed to being the most obvious one). After installing the firmware fix last spring most issues went away with 2 exceptions (popping sounds from the speakers when I pause my DVR or PS3, and the inability to switch to 720p mode at certain times, most notably when trying to play Guitar Hero 3...come on HK Guitar Hero keeps my stress level low I need it :) ). Now they went on to newer pastures (AVR-254) so I'm guessing these issues remain unfixed. Not so cool..what's my incentive to buy the new shiny receiver if I know that 6 months from now they'll stop fixing bugs because the then next new thing is out?? Bad business practice if you ask me. So far I've been loyal to HK but I'm seriously thinking about jumping ship the next time I replace this. The sad thing is that they don't need a lot of money to fix all this, just good management which is hard to come by nowadays. When thousands of people read the negative reviews on avsforum you can't afford not to fix the bugs...unfortunately some execs still don't get this.

4 out of 5 stars Pleased with my purchase   February 28, 2009

I've had this for a week now and and am very pleased with my decision. This is replacing an Onkyo 5.1 with similar power ratings. The sound is very similar and the main differences are the HDMI inputs, an extra IR input and the RS232 input for future use.

One big plus is the OSD which makes programming a breeze on the HK compared to the Onkyo. The microphone assisted auto tune for the speakers is great as well.

I have had no "popping" or sync errors that others have described but I will second that the remote is a bit intimidating and after a week I am still learning cool tricks and shortcuts on the thing. I'm running a Magnavox Cable/DVR, a Pioneer DVD and an XBox through the HK with no problems. I'm using 7 JVC 145.5 speakers with a larger JVC center speaker and love the sound on all formats.

I'd recommend this to anyone looking for quality on a budget.
