| Editorial Reviews:
Album Description Thanks in large part to Reverend Al's soul classic 'Let's Stay Together' being prominently featured in the hit film 'Pulp Fiction', a newfound appreciation & interest in this R&B legend amongst both Baby Boomers rediscovering him and Gen Xer's yearning for musical sustenance in a world overrun by a swarm of hollow teenyboppers and bland 'alternative' rockers. Thus 'Listen - The Rarities' is an ideal compilation for disciples new & old looking to expand their collection of quality recordings by the original Rev as it contains a whopping 18 rare tracks, remixes and cuts that were unreleased at the time of the performance. Best of all, no other retrospective like this exists anywhere in the world! 2000 release. Standard jewel case.

If I had to chose only one album to listen to for the rest of my life, Al Green's Listen - The Rarities would be the one! December 6, 2005 Music Lover (Canada) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I absolutely LOVE this album. It's simply PERFECT! It's Al Green at his best. A DEFINITE MUST for any music lover's collection! :)
Great mix of Al Green tunes August 15, 2001 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a great collection of songs. I recommend this to anyone who wants more from a compilation other than the standard Al tunes that you're used to seeing. The songs here range from soulful and funky to inspirational and moving(and even the inspirational songs make you want to groove, i.e., Surprise Attack/Highway to Heaven and Up Above My Head). You will not be disappointed with this purchase.
Not an average compilation or re-release December 22, 2000 William Jones (Rockville, MD USA) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This replaces an lp called "Love Ritual: Rare and Unreleased". The lp and cd both go back to the master tapes and bring back tracks that either failed to make it to albums or were changed drastically by Willie Mitchell's production aesthetic. "Love Ritual" and "Beware", for example, both made it to lp; however, Al Green's orgasmic chanting was silenced in "Love Ritual" (along with the addition of strings), and "Beware" was edited down from 15 minutes to 8. The result is astounding. Because of the "stripped down" nature of the 18 selections, you get to hear the band and you get to hear Al Green. No interruptions from the string sections! In addition, many tunes that do not quite fit the "Al Green Mold" are included, whereas they were dropped from original releases (hear "Love is Real" and be amazed that it was never released. For that matter, be amazed that it's Al Green). Unlike the "Love Ritual..." lp, there is room for extended tracks and, with the playing time at almost 80 minutes, this is a Must-Have purchase. Personally, I think it's the best example of his work (though one will still want to own select "classics" like Let's Stay Together and Call Me).
