Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
The leading practitioner of swamp pop, Johnnie Allan has extended the Cajun style with his pleading but gutsy vocals, rocking & wailing accordion & stomping dance beat. The track he is forever associated with, 'Promised Land', is here as well as his other big South Louisiana hits including 'I'm Missing You'. Great versions of Bobby Charles' 'Your Picture & Somebody Else', Tommy McLain's 'Sweet Dreams', Jivin' Gene's 'I Cried', Merle Haggard's 'Today I Started Loving You Again' & even 'Isle Of Capri'! Compiled by John Broven with a nice sleeve note including Johnnie Allan telling his own story & a detailed discography. If you like Cajun music you'll love this. If you're not sure what the hell Cajun music is, you're in for a rocking surprise. Ace. 1992.

5 out of 5 stars SWAMP POP--Not Cajun   February 3, 2004

Don't be misled by the editorial review of this album. This isn't Cajun music. Granted, there are obvious Cajun influences throughout this disc, but this is Swamp Pop. If you're not from Louisiana, you may not have heard of this type of music. Johnnie Allan is a "god" in Swamp Pop terms. This music leans heavily toward 50's rock and country twang, but Cajun music is also a big influence.

I grew up listening to the likes of Johnnie Allan, Warren Storm and Rod Bernard. My father is a huge fan of Swamp Pop, as he should be. He grew up with this stuff. It is totally unique to Louisiana. When I found my father's collection of Swamp Pop, I immediately fell in love. If you ever get the chance to see any of these guys live, take it.

The songs here may not sound familiar to many people, but trust me when I say that you are in for a unique surprise. "The Promised Land" is a Chuck Berry tune that Allan rocks right on through. One of my personal favorites, "South To Louisiana" is a take on "North To Alaska" by Johnny Horton. "Let's Do It" is another swamp rocker worthy of listening to. "You Got Me Whistling," "Graduation Night," "Please Help Me I'm Falling" and "Your Picture" are instant Johnnie Allan classics.

No other song on this compilation is bad. Everything contained here is just good ol' fashioned rock n' roll with a Cajun twist. Enjoy this album with friends and spread the word about Louisiana's great Swamp Pop legends.
