Splittin' Apart at The Seams September 2, 2010 Tim Brough (Springfield, PA United States) Band of Horses jump to a major label and do the new members shuffle for "Infinite Arms." While the result still sounds like the band that recorded "Everything All The Time" (mainly due to Ben Birdwell's wonderful voice), the band now sounds more like it belongs to Ben than ever before. His voice is now more front and center, the playing tighter and there's less of a dream-world sound than before.
This is a mixed blessing. While "Infinite Arms" feels more like a cohesive record than the previous two, it comes at the expense of the grandiose mood swings those albums owned. Ben is also working on his radio-friendly chops. "Laraedo" is the obvious ringer, but I was also seriously taken by the Beach Boy harmony on "Blue Beard." "For Annabelle" even comes off as a Southern Rock/Eagles ballad. There's atmosphere to spare all around (and especially on the title track and opener, "Factory"), so those who did fall in love with the ethereal sounds of the earlier album will find their space.
Overall, a solid record, maybe their best. Like Fleet Foxes and My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses is finding a way to stay spatial while still finding their way down to Earth.
excellent August 28, 2010 Listen to the Wind (Indiana) this is an extremely talented group with the ability to put a variety of styles together - I will probably seek out everything they have produced.
Band of Horses "mellow out" August 23, 2010 Carly Errebo (kansas) Really 3 1/2 stars. The Band Of Horses 3rd studio album "Infinite Suns" #7, is their weakest to date.
They had some good songs on this disc, but nothing compared to "Cease To Begin"#35 in 2007. Great songs include:
The jaunty-rock of "Compliments", a 70's style rock song "Laredo"#34 modern rock, the bouncy "Dilly" and the rockin' "N.W. Apt." and 2 good songs "Factory" and "On My Way Back Home". Not a bad record but too many filler tunes. I think they'll correct this with their next release.
A grower August 18, 2010 P. Smith (Tacoville) I initially enjoyed this album when I first heard it, but not until I was able delve into and digest this record was i able to really appreciate it.
This is a record that needs to be listened to as a whole to realize its greatness.
Highly recommended!
the first BOH album that i have purchased August 16, 2010 jkeiser I havent stopped listening to it since i downloaded it a few days ago. Very solid top to bottom.
