Product Description
Ann Wilson and her sister Nancy first showed the world that women can rock when their band Heart stormed the charts in the 70s with songs like Crazy On You, Magic Man, and Barracuda, and many more. They continued topping the charts through the 80s and into the 90s with huge hits like These Dreams, Alone, What About Love, If Looks Could Kill, Never, and a string of other hits that showcased the sisters enormous talents. Along the way, Heart sold more than 30 million records, had 21 Top 40 hits, sold out arenas worldwide, and had a profound influence on rock music.

Red Velvet Car -- the most personal and powerful work yet from Ann and Nancy Wilson, and their first album in 6 years -- takes generations of Heart fans on what truly feels like the musical ride of a lifetime. Powerfully produced by Ben Mink, Red Velvet Car is a thoroughly electrifying song cycle of largely acoustic-based sound and a stunning album with a true and renewed sense of purpose. Ann and Nancy committed themselves to writing and recording an album that was as authentic as possible, culling from their own personal experiences and some universal themes. The result on Red Velvet Car is an album of breathtaking intimacy and honesty.

3 out of 5 stars +1/2 - Ann and Nancy Wilson rock back to the glory days of Heart   September 9, 2010
hyperbolium (Earth, USA)
Heart was long ago reduced to Ann and Nancy Wilson and support staff; fans that latched onto the band in its first-flush of mid-70s fame may never have made the turn that left Roger Fisher, Steve Fossen and Michael Derosier behind. But new listeners climbed on board for the band's mid-80s renaissance, and together with a helping of longtime fans, the band sustained into the `90s. The sisters worked on side and solo projects, but recaptured the rock `n' roll heart of Heart with 2004's Jupiter's Darling. Six years later, with Ann Wilson's 2007 solo debut in the rear view mirror, the duo is back with Ben Mink in tow as co-producer and co-instrumentalist.

Together with a rhythm section of Ben Smith (drums) and Ric Markmann (bass), Heart is more of a concept of the Wilson sister's musicality than an on-going concern as a working band. Despite that, the productions sound surprisingly fluid and whole. The songs reach back to the band's 1970s folk-influenced rock glories, skipping past the sounds of their MTV years. Ann Wilson doesn't hit the spine-tingling high notes of her younger years, but she's a cannier singer these days, able to find drama within her limitations and deploying the grit in her voice to convey emotion and passion. Nancy Wilson is still charming as vocalist, singing sweetly on the country-tinged "Hey You."

The Wilson's lay down the line on "WTF" with hard-charging guitars and a lyric full of angry recriminations. Ann Wilson's "what's the matter with you?" is all the more powerful for its near under-the-breath delivery, and the thick middle part is an interesting layer cake of muddily echoed vocals and sharp, insistent rhythm. The album plays up its dynamic range, slamming rock tunes into the gentle abyss of string-lined blues, building the urgency and tension of songs as they lead to dissipated resolutions. Memories of the Wilson's childhood Seattle are heard in "Queen City," and though the album isn't themed on Autumnal years (Ann turned 60 this year, Nancy 56), nostalgia informs optimistic forward plans as much as it contemplates earlier lessons.

At times the album's instrumental backings outshine the lyrics, with the rhythm section augmented by great guitar figures and Ann Wilson's vocals riffing on phrases rather than telling stories. The appreciation of "Sunflower" feels like a reverie that was better left in its personal moment and the fear in "Death Valley" doesn't have the palpable heat of its subject. Better are the Zeppelin-styled folkloric rock of "Safronia's Mark" and the emotional closer "Sand." It's on the last tune that the Wilsons seem to connect most deeply with the lyrics, with Ann straining into her upper register. This may not be the exuberant first press of a rock band, but the Wilsons still have the inclination to rock, and do so with genuine fire. 3-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. 3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not the best Heart album...   September 7, 2010

This is a decent record. It's not hard rocking Heart, but it has some good moments. To the wacknut that says Nancy can't sing, gimme a break. Nancy's songs on this album are actually good ones.

I do have to agree that the lyrics for "Queen City" are absolutely terrible and the song itself is pretty awful too. I can't remember hearing a worse song from Heart. The other song I'm not digging at all is "Death Valley". Other than that, I like the album quite a bit.

I do have to say that the production seems a bit muddy in places. The sound isn't as crisp as it should be. If you listen to the Capitol Heart albums (Bad Animals, etc.) their sound quality was really great. RVC just has a bit of a muddiness going on with it. With acoustic guitars, that's kind of a deal breaker.

Also, the album cover, both front and back are pretty amateurish as well. The photo on the back of the album looks like something taken with a Polaroid or pocket instamatic. Really terrible photo.

"Sand" is one of the finest Ann and Nancy moments ever. It was great on the LoveMongers album and it's great here too. I actually prefer this version as the middle section of the Lovemongers version always seemed out of place for such a touching song about loss.

"Sunflower" is another favorite. Wish Ann would've sung a 7th harmony under Nancy's chorus. That would've added that "Heart-ness" to it.

"WTF" is also decent, though the chorus is kind of funky and tough to hear.

For the best song on the album, gotta go with "Saffronia's Mark" (and of course "Sand"). This sounds like old-school Heart to me (pre-Capitol).

Decent album. Another Bebe Le Strange would've been more than welcome, but RVC is worth the price of admission.

This is the long awaited album that we Heartmongers have been anticipating since 2004! This album has a great mix of rock, folk, and even a little bit country. Ann Wilson proves, yet again, that her powerhouse voice is showing no signs of slowing down and Nancy Wilson proves that she can still rip up a guitar better than most of the boys in the business. The album is a cohesive body of work that translates quite well to the live arena. If you're looking for an album that takes you back to when it was really all about the music and not the image of the artists, this is a MUST HAVE album. No bells or whistles. Just good, real, and relevant musicianship that holds appeal to music lovers of all ages.

Don't miss out on this excellent CD. This is Heart's first CD in 6 years and it is well worth the wait. As usual, Ann and Nancy have taken time to share some hard rocking as well as softer and/or ballad songs on Red Velvet Car. All tracks are strong.
"WTF" and "Wheels" are tough rocking songs with great guitar riffs that make you want to break out your air guitar. "Hey You" is sung by Nancy and has quite a catchy chourus. "Red Velvet Car" is the title track and is a sultry rock ballad sung with emotion as only Ann Wilson can pull off. "Sand" is wonderful homage to a friend that has passed. I'm telling you ....go and pick up your copy today!
